JOU 4930 – social media tools

JOU 4930 : Social Networks and Social Media – social media tools

Probably the best way to learn about social media is to use them, so we will be using a variety of social media as tools or platforms for some of our class activities. Some tools we will just “take a tour” through, others will be important to our class online experience. No prior experience with these services is expected for the class. For those who are already expert with the services, you will be challenged to go beyond your current knowledge.

Diigo group:
http://groups.diigo.com/group/uflsms
Diigo is a website that allows you to store and share web sites, blog posts or other items you find interesting. (Diigo is similar to delicious, a similar site you may have used or heard about. I prefer Diigo for reasons I’ll explain in class.) Almost all the course readings (and many other interesting web links) can be found in the Delicious links.

Twitter:
Hashtag: #uflsms  Class account: @uflsms
We’ll be using Twitter for our class project and other elements, so you will need a Twitter account if you don’t have one. If you already have one and would like to keep your personal tweets separate from your class tweets, just create a new account for class.
You can use the hashtag above to ask questions or share other class-related information. We’ll be testing out CoTweet on our class account as a multi-account solution.

Flickr:
We’ll be creating a Flickr group as part of our class project – group name to be determined later.

Tumblr:
We’ll be using Tumblr as part of our class project. The name and exact details of the group will be determined later as we work out our project with our client.

Facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/UF-Social-Media-Scholars/16257793492
We’ll be working with the class page when we go over creating, using and promoting Facebook pages. (You also can check the page if you’d like to see what topics we covered in the first version of this class in 2008.)

LinkedIn pages and groups:
We’ll be discussing LinkedIn in depth when we talk about ways to manage your online identity. There is a LinkedIn group created for the class that we’ll use when we talk about groups on LinkedIn.

Ning group:
http://uflsms.ning.com/
There is a Ning group for the class to use when we look at Ning. Now that Ning charges for groups, we may not be using this group. More on this as we get to that part of the class.

Foursquare:
We may be using this service as part of our class project. More information on this will be available as we develop our class project.
